Have you ever wondered why a #seagull stands on one leg? A unique system of blood veins in their legs called “rete mirabile” reduces heat loss. Arteries pump the warm blood into the legs from the heart with the cooler blood returning via other veins that are close to the warm blood arteries. By pulling the leg up to the warmth of its body, it can reduce up to half of the heat loss through its legs.

Came across this baby Raccoon on a country side road in Prince Edward County. Even though I was only a few feet away, the little guy didn’t take off. Excellent photo opportunity, but had feeling that he/she might have been sick.
